Circus Maximus ‘Havoc’

It’s been four years since we’ve heard anything new from Norwegian prog metal band Circus Maximus but they are finally back with their fourth studio album, “Havoc.”   The new record is a bit different than what they’ve done in the past and after a few listens, it sounds almost like two different albums.  The first part of the record has some heavier, guitar driven songs with the thumping bass lines of Glen Mollen front and center in the title track and the first single “Pages.”  “Highest Bitter” is the most melodic of these songs with a real sludgy Seattle grunge vibe to it.

The final four songs of the record are back to a true prog metal sound and this is where the band really shines.  With exquisite and passionate keyboard work from Lasse Finbraten, especially on “Loved Ones,”  and brilliant guitar runs from Mats Haugen, the result is simply epic.  “After the Fire” and the album closer “Chivalry” have everything a great prog metal song should with challenging tempo changes, grand solos, and terrific hooks.  Through it all, the vocals of Michael Eriksen are exceptional as his voice proves up to the challenge, majestically soaring yet tender and poignant when needed.

Circus Maximus has stepped out of their box a bit on “Havoc.”  Whether or not fans appreciate their experimenting a bit remains to be seen.  Fortunately for the band, their musicianship is second to none and the record contains some absolutely monumental prog metal tracks that are well worth adding to your collection.
