Grammy award winning rockers Red Hot Chili Peppers are back with their 11th album and first since 2011, “The Getaway.” The new record was produced by Danger Mouse and has a much softer feel than the Chili Peppers’ earlier work.
Kicking things off is the title track which has more of a pop feel mixed with a bit of classic RHCP funk. The first single “Dark Necessities” is up next with the signature slap bass of Flea front and center but once again a very low key vibe. In fact, the entire album has a mellow, introspective feel to it, perhaps a reflection of where the band members are in their own lives. There’s a disco vibe on “Go Robot” with “Feasting on the Flowers” being the only track with a real rock feel with its nicely done breakdown. Front man Anthony Kiedis does a good job with the more laid back feel with a standout performance on “Detroit.”
If you’re expecting “Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magik” era Chili Peppers, you’re going to be disappointed. But if you’re willing to take a chance on the softer side of RHCP, you’ll find a mellow funky groove that’s sure to grow on you.
