Finnish symphonic rockers Apocolyptica made their last stop in the United States this past Saturday before the band headed back to Europe. The band will be coming back to tour in late summer/early fall behind ‘7th Symphony,’ which will be released on August 24, 2010.
The band took the stage at 9:45pm to a pretty full Towne Ballroom. The band is led by cellists Eicca Toppinen, Paavo Lotjonen, and Perttu Kivilaakso, while backed by drummer Mikko Siren. The band is also touring with Finnish vocalist Richard “Tipe” Johnson who sings lead on tracks “End of Me,” I’m Not Jesus,” “Life Burns,” and “I Don’t Care.” A sample of Kiss’ “Detroit Rock City” was done at the end of the song “Life Burns.” Most of the evening’s between-song dialogue came courtesy of Eicca. He talked about how appreciative he is that the fans come out to see them and supplied a brief introduction to each song. The other two cellists were also just as much in the spotlight as Eicca. Perttu and Paavo brought their “A” game and all 3 meshed beautifully to create something that is cool and refreshing to experience on the rock circuit.
I’m sure people are apprehensive or have preconceived notions of seeing a band that plays cellos. If you have any of these thoughts, they will immediately be dispelled as Apocalyptica brings an element of neoclassical mixed with heavy metal that is not to be missed!
