The Cult @ The Fillmore, Detroit, MI 11-19-10

The band is currently on fire with a solid run of sold out shows and tours. The Detroit show was packed with high energy and fans were both old and new. Vocalist Ian Astbury made constant comments on how much they love Detroit, and said we were definitely the most hyped crowd of the L’America Tour.
Ian was sounding great and looking very much like the late great Jim Morrison, with long wavy hair and a full beard. He even commented to the men in the audience, saying “Man up and grow a beard.” Ian has an amazing rock star presence. He sported sunglasses, a black leather coat, and brown vintage cowboy boots. There were more reminders of Jim Morrison throughout the evening, with Doors songs played between sets, and heck, even the tour is named after a Doors song, “L’America.” Ian tossed out several tambourines to the audience, including the broken pieces of one. Guitar picks were plentiful as well and could be easily obtained if you were on the main floor.
Singer Aimee Nash, of the psychedelic alternative opening band Black Ryder, joined the Cult on stage for the song “Wildflower.” She sang along and played tambourine. Ian and Aimee kissed on the lips as she departed from the stage. Rumors are flying that they are in a relationship together and not just touring band buddies. Lead guitarist Billy Duffy played all those great riffs, but not with a lot of enthusiasm. Duffy seemed stiff on stage, and didn’t seem to be enjoying the moment, but just going through the motions. Drummer John Tempesta was amazing to watch as he seems to perform so effortlessly. It is awesome to see him touring again with the Cult. Overall, it was a fantastic show and the set list was a good combination of old hits and new.
