Scandal was one of many bands to emerge from the MTV era that seemed to have great potential. In a few short years the band, fronted by Patty Smyth, cranked out four Billboard Top 100 hits, including “The Warrior” and “Goodbye to You.”
Smyth went on to a solo career, charting a few more times, most notably with the song “Sometimes Love Just Ain’t Enough,” a duet with Don Henley. The latest incarnation of Scandal appeared at The Bears Den Saturday night in front of a small but enthusiastic crowd. They put on a tremendous show, making one wonder what the band could have accomplished if they had stayed together throughout the 1980’s.
Smyth proved to be quite a performer, belting out the bands classics with ease and wandering around the venue, literally bringing the show into the audience numerous times. Smyth spent the evening chomping on apples to keep her throat hydrated, a fact she shared with an audience member who asked her what she was eating. Smyth interacted with the crowd as if she was at a party, fielding questions, telling stories, and just seeming to have a wonderful time. When asked where hubby John McEnroe was, Smyth said, “he’s home with the kids.”
Overall it was a fantastic show, full of energy and some great songs that brought the crowd to their feet on more than one occasion.
