Italian goth rockers, Lacuna Coil, are about to drop their latest effort, “Dark Adrenaline,” on the metal world. In recent years, Lacuna has strayed a bit from the gothic imagery of their early years. This trend continues on “Dark Adrenaline” which is full of great melodies and catchy hooks.
The highlight of the release is the dual vocals of male lead, Andrea Ferro, and their female lead, Cristina Scabbia. The two work well with each other and the contrast between the low-key style of Ferro and the crushing vocals of Scabbia is amazing. Surround the two with world class Italian musicians and you have a recipe for success.
“Dark” is packed with fantastic songs including the first single, “Trip the Darkness” and an interesting cover of R.E.M.’s “Losing My Religion.” My only criticism is that Cristina’s vocals can be overpowering at times. I much prefer the songs “Intoxicated” and “The Army Inside,” which begin with a great rhythm and “My Spirit” where Scabbia holds back a little and allows the guitar work of Cristiano Migliore and Marco Biazzi to shine through.
With the release of “Dark Adrenaline,” Lacuna Coil proves they have what it takes to survive in the metal world. Give it a listen.
