Jane’s Addiction is one of the few bands out there that encompass so many forms of music that you cannot categorize them. The band is currently on tour in support of their latest effort, “The Great Escape Artist,” and made a rare WNY appearance at the Rochester Auditorium last Tuesday night. The band is still comprised of original members Perry Farrell on vocals, Dave Navarro on guitar and Stephen Perkins on drums, with the former and back again, Chris Chaney on bass.

The bands stage and entire show can’t really be described at all in this review. I will give it my best shot though. Aerialists, dancing girls, various colored lights, a stuffed grizzly bear, half naked women statues and various movie clips were all a part of the show. What they had to do with each other, I don’t know, but the band proved one important factor on Tuesday. That factor is that the bands performance and sound was simply amazing!

Farrell’s energy and Navarro’s steady guitar licks drove the night’s overall performance to exceptional levels. The underrated Perkins not only provided a solid backbone to the festivities by playing his large drum kit, but also a mastered a smaller kit for the songs “Classic Girl” and “Jane Says.” Chaney, who has been in and out of the band in recent years, also was a nice compliment to Phillips playing style. “Just Because,” tore the place up and sounded amazing!

After “Jane Says,” Farrell addressed the crowd with the following statement; “People need to dance or they just fucking die!” Farrell also was mildly joking at how cold he was, as he referred to the fact that he was from California, and that a person in front of the stage had a nice scarf. Without hesitation, said person threw the scarf up on stage. Farrell thanked her profusely and then said he would give it back to her or trade her something for it.

So all in all, the best way to describe this show is to just go see it for yourself in person because seeing is believing, or more accurately, simply unbelievable!
