On tour in support of their latest album “The Path Of Totality”, KoRn made an appearance in Rochester, NY at The Historic Main Street Armory, this past Thursday night.
Opening their set with “Divine”, the crowd came alive, moshing and surfing to the bass driven groove provided by “Fieldy.” Their set started with a dose of older songs until it transitioned into the newer dub-step infused material, and then back. Although the fans didn’t seem to mind the newer stuff in the middle of the set, I found it less appealing to listen to. Don’t get me wrong, Jonathan Davis, James “Munky” Shaffer, Reginald “Fieldy” Arvizu, and Ray Luzier bring it every song, I’m just not a big fan of dub-step.
As a live show, KoRn sounded great, even in a wide open venue like The Armory. The heavy bass lines and thunderous drum beats, cut right through every bone in your body, forcing you to move. When you ad Davis’s thrash metal screams, you cannot help but feel angst and hence the tension release of moshing. Which the crowd did plenty of.
An interesting twist to the show, was hearing them play a cover of Pink Floyd’s “The Wall”. Davis’ singing style surprisingly fit the song very well, and of course Fieldy’s bass had a prominent sound in the song. It was actually done very well and pleasure to listen to. Finishing with that song, there was a video that played them off, where they waited for the screaming mass to summon them back out.
They began their encore with “Shoots and Ladders”. The eruption that followed the opening notes was deafening. KoRn ended that song with a cover of Metallica’s “One,” which flowed seamlessly. They capped their set with their 1995 debut single, “Blind”. I thought it was a nice touch going full circle of the bands musical history. I’m not sure if anyone else in attendance noticed the “timeline” KoRn had created for the show. Then again, I’m sure not many of them really cared. They were there to party with one of the most influential nu metal bands ever, and what a party it was!
