Seether @ Erie Canal Harbor Central Wharf, Buffalo, New York 7-12-12

South Africa’s best musical export, Seether, recently played the Thursday in the Square concert series for its Western New York fans. The band has been extensively touring the world nonstop this year is support of its 2011 studio effort “Holding Onto Strings Better Left to Fray.” The band has consisted of a 3-piece outfit since the departure of guitarist Troy McLawhorn in 2011.

Seether took the stage at 8pm sharp with the first few chords strummed by lead guitarist and vocalist Shaun Morgan. The opening track to “Holding Onto Strings Better Left to Fray” called “Fur Cue” was the choice to set the evenings mood. A good selection in my opinion, as the crunchy riffs set up for what was about to take place for the next hour and half; a kick ass rock show. Probably the most consistent rock band booked for the Thursday concert series, Seether didn’t disappoint as they stuck to the basics of playing and letting the music do the talking. Morgan did make it more fun and interesting at times as he changed some lyrics to some of the lines throughout the set. He also introduced drummer John Humphrey before his drum solo as Justin Bieber (referring to John’s haircut.) Morgan noodled his way around before going into “The Gift.” It should be noted that Morgan’s voice held up extremely well all night long in the humidity/heat.

Bassist Dale Stewart showed his flexibility and donned the acoustic guitar for “Broken” and “Country Song.” The three fed off each other and the set flowed smoothly. Again, one of the best nights of music the Western New York crowd will see all summer and most of all, the price was right (free!).
