In recent years there seems to have been a greater appreciation in this country of the talent of Queen’s legendary singer Freddie Mercury. The rest of the world embraced Queen well beyond the years they fell off the US charts, but what people fell in love with was the over the top flamboyant performer, an anathema during a conservative revival in America.
“Freddie Mercury: The Great Pretender,” is an appropriate title for this, the latest piece in the Queen story. Instead of adding to the mythos, this documentary provides a more intimate, and human portrait of the singer.
What fans of Queen will enjoy is the inclusion of tons of never before seen material. It’s hard to believe that at this point there is anything that remained to be unearthed, but as usual, Eagle Rock has provided fans with some real gems.
It would be easy to compare this to the recently released Queen documentary, but “Freddie Mercury: The Great Pretender,” is a documentary worth seeing for its own merits, and thus it is not a fair comparison. It is good enough that even casual fans of Mercury will find the story entertaining and thought provoking.
