On tour in support of their 8th studio effort titled “Curve,” Canadian rockers Our Lady Peace made a stop in Niagara Falls, NY, this past Friday with a show at the Rapids Theatre. Playing to a near capacity crowd, the band continues to draw fans, regardless of the year or venue. Led by front man Raine Maida, Our Lady Peace enjoyed playing a strong 17 song set, consisting of four (4) new songs and others spanning OLP’s 20 year career.

Maida played the acoustic guitar on a handful of selections including “Allowance,” “Superman,” “Is Anybody Home,” and “Clumsy.” He also provided a megaphone on various songs throughout the night. The backbone of drummer Duncan Coutts and bassist Jeremy Taggart were the highlight for me. They were both consistent and strong throughout the show. Coutts kit maybe on the small side, but he played large and within the confines of the band. He drove the song “Not Enough.”

Maida encouraged a fan not to put his camera away and told him, “You can tape the show man, we don’t care. Continue taping!” Maida also remarked, “I heard Morrissey played here recently and only played 60 minutes. Well, you will get a lot longer from us, at least an hour and 20.” This drew a big round of applause. For the song “As Fast As You Can,” Maida made his way atop one of the speakers to deliver the vocals.

Guitarist Steve Mazur, dressed in a white shirt with black pants and suspenders, is a talent in his own right. I feel he is a very underrated guitarist. I like how he is not flashy but delivers on cue on every song consistently. This show, or maybe the entire tour, is different from prior tours as the band is touring with a keyboardist. Robin Hatch did an admirable job on the keys throughout the show. All in all, another stellar performance by one of Canada’s true gems!
