Chuck Negron @ Bears Den (Inside the Seneca Niagara Casino), Niagara Falls, New York 12-31-12

Chuck Negron @ Bears Den (Inside the Seneca Niagara Casino), Niagara Falls, New York Monday, December 31, 2012

Former Three Dog Night vocalist, Chuck Negron, rang in the new year at the Bears Den, inside the Seneca Niagara Casino, in Niagara Falls, NY, on Monday night. Negron, who looks amazing at 70 years young, sang all the classic hits that Three Dog Night fans came to hear.

For those who don’t know, Three Dog Night was one of the biggest bands in the world in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The band first disbanded in 1976. After years of drug abuse, Negron finally cleaned himself up and has enjoyed a steady solo career ever since. For this show, Negron had a bevy of talented musicians surrounding him, including his son Dan on bass and Howard Laravae on keyboards.

The show started out with “The Family of Man” from Three Dog Night’s 1971 “Harmony” album. Negron playfully interjected with the crowd and a particular woman (being New Year’s Eve) who was occasionally tooting her horn. Negron was talking about the song “The Show Must Go On” and the album that it came off of “Hard Labor” as a fan in the front then proceeded to hold the album up. Then he asked for the fan to get a pen and he would sign it. A few other fans followed suit and Negron obliged by signing every album that was presented to him.

His keyboardists showed their ranges and traded vocals on “Eli’s Coming.” Laravae took control and showed off his skills during “Chest Fever.” Negron’s highlight was when he delivered a heartfelt rendition of “Never Been to Spain.” The set lasted for about an hour and 25 minutes and this was the 8 O’clock show. He never did follow the set list as he kept his band’s and the audience’s attention throughout the performance. He was set to perform another show at 11pm. I’m sure the fans at 11pm were just as satisfied as the 8pm fans were.
