Device ‘Device’

Debuting at number eleven on Billboard’s Top 200 Chart is Disturbed frontman David Draiman’s new band and self titled CD, Device. David co-wrote the album with former Filter guitarist Geno Lenardo and has enlisted Evanescence drummer Will Hunt and Dope guitarist Virus to head out on the road.

Device is a great mix of both hard rock and industrial. Of course there are shades of Disturbed, especially in the opening track, “You Think You Know,” but David really goes in a much more experimental direction on this record. The first single, “Vilify,” is a great track but only hints at what is to come. “Through It All” features an appearance by Glenn Hughes and starts slowly but builds into complete industrial chaos by the end. Another explosive track is “Out of Line” which has Draiman trading off vocals with Serj Tankian and also features the one and only Geezer Butler. A change of pace is provided by the unexpected cover of the Ozzy/Lita Ford classic, “Close My Eyes Forever,” which has David teaming up with Halestorm’s Lzzy Hale for a poignant vocal duet. I also really like “Opinion” because it seemed to be just a perfect balance of the hard rock and industrial combo and has awesome riffs provided by none other than Tom Morello.

I’m not a huge fan of industrial rock so I wasn’t sure what to expect from this record but I really enjoyed it. David’s vocals are just huge and he is able to go in a much more melodic direction on this album than he ever has with Disturbed. I certainly hope this isn’t a one time project as I can’t wait to hear what Device will do next!
