Frampton and “live” are two words that are synonymous in rock music. For years, Peter Frampton has proved that the studio and live environment are distinct, and some artist’s excel in one area. Frampton is the quintessential live performer that gave us the quintessential live album and now Eagle Rock has re-released Frampton’s quintessential live video, “Live in Detroit.”
The timing is curious considering Frampton recently released a stellar live video of his “Frampton Comes Alive!” anniversary show. Nevertheless, this document is one of the three pillars of Frampton’s career, and documents Frampton’s reclamation of his well-deserved status as one of rock music’s greatest live performers.
“Live in Detroit,” is well over ten years old, but it’s legendary status outlived the video’s original shelf life, and has been a sought after collector’s item for fans that have joined or rejoined Frampton’s dedicated fan base.
Having seen Frampton at various stages of his career, this is an important era because he is playing with a conviction and intensity that seems to ignore the fact that songs like Humble Pie’s “Off the Hook” and “I Don’t Need no Doctor” were already thirty years old. Moreover, his “FCA!” material like “Show me the Way” and “Do You Feel Like We Do” had been seemingly played to death by rock radio.
At the risk of sounding too clichéd, this was the moment in his career where Frampton came alive again, and he has ridden the wave ever since.
Included in the bonus material is rehearsal footage from “FCA 35!” and a new interview with Frampton. This one falls in the “must own” category for Frampton fans and lovers of live rock concerts.
