Pop Evil ‘Onyx’

One of the brightest spots on the American rock scene over the last few years has been the Michigan hardrockers Pop Evil. Hot off the heels of their successful “War of Angels” record and a relentless touring schedule, they’re back with their latest release, “Onyx.” The title is a perfect fit for the new album. Much like its namesake stone, “Onyx” is darker and yet more polished than anything Pop Evil has ever done.

The album kicks off with the heavy hitting “Goodbye My Friend” with a driving bass line from Matt DiRito and the edgier lyrics of “Deal with the Devil.” The first single, “Trenches,” is up next and is just a monster of a tune. With a terrific hook and catchy chorus, it has all the makings of a classic arena rock anthem and will, no doubt, be a fan favorite at their live shows. Of course there are also a few radio friendly ballads including the heartfelt tale of loss in “Torn to Pieces” and the huge power ballad “Beautiful.” An interesting tune is “Divide” which features lead vocalist Leigh Kakaty doing some raplike lyrics much like “Infest” era Papa Roach. “Onyx” closes with an alternate mix of “Beautiful” which is stripped down and piano driven. I like this mix even better than the original because it really allowed Kakaty’s vocals to simply soar.

Pop Evil just seems to get better and better with each new album. There is no doubt that “Onyx’ will take their career to the next level. It’s bands like this that give me hope for the future of rock.
