Rainbow ‘Live in Munich 1977 CD’

Capturing the magic of a live performance is a difficult task, often times the vibe gets lost in translation. However, in the case of Rainbow’s 1977 show in Munich, Eagle Rock Entertainment did a fantastic job of recreating the energy of that show in a remastered 2 disk DVD and CD set.

To describe the vocals of the late Ronnie James Dio as “haunting” is an understatement as they will resonate through every cell of your being as you listen to the 9 tracks included on the CD, including “Kill the King,” “Man on the Silver Mountain,” and the eternal classic, “Long Live Rock ‘n Roll.” Though some may argue he was just emerging onto the scene, Dio’s polished pipes and front man persona are considerably well established and were undoubtedly a colossal factor in the success of the band.

At times, Dio almost sounds like an aerobics instructor as he leads the audience in various chants and spouts out instructions using his uniquely eloquent tone and demeanor.

Meanwhile, celebrated guitar virtuoso and founder, Ritchie Blackmore, entrances the audience with every note and guitar solo, most of which span well beyond the studio versions of the original tunes. “Still I’m Sad” clocks in just shy of 20 minutes, followed by “Catch the Rainbow,” and “Do you Close Your Eyes” at just over 17 minutes each.

It’s worth mentioning that the DVD contains additional goodies such as promo videos, a photo gallery, slide show and audio commentary, interviews and bonus performance footage. In either format, these epic arrangements are powerful and timeless and will surely impress rock music connoisseurs of all ages. In fact, any young’uns curious about the roots of rock and roll and heavy metal should start right here.
