The Band Perry’s sophomore effort “Pioneer” from Republic Nashville was released this month. This predominantly country CD has a bluegrass flavor mixed in with some classic rock guitar riffs and pop lyrics. The opening number “Better Dig Two” has it all, starting with a bluegrass banjo, fiddle playing and some rock and roll guitar riffs brought together with cleverly comical lyrics and countrified vocal twang. The lyrics are also pretty easy to sing-a-long with, giving the tune a poppy appeal. This sibling trio obviously works well and plays well together. Frontwoman Kimberly Perry, along with brothers Reid and Neil, know a thing or three about making music.
The second track “Done” is my personal favorite because of it’s up-tempo rock beat and fiddle trills that are reminiscent of Baroque period violinists. Instrumentally, it’s quite an interesting piece. “I’m a Keeper” opens up with a wah-wah guitar and also keeps a rock beat.
“Forever Mine Nevermind” was co-written by Brad Paisley offers up a classic ‘kiss-off’ theme featuring Paisley on guitar. The title track “Pioneer” is lyrically strong, harmonious and melodic. In fact, vocal layering and extremely tight harmonies are consistent throughout this production. Kimberly Perry has a powerful voice, but her twangy drawl is what really gives this CD its country sound. “Mother Like Mine” showcases Kimberly Perry’s vocal range. This song evokes childhood memories and serves as a touching tribute to the trio’s mom.
From a woman’s perspective, that being mine, the lyrics on this CD are pretty relatable, but I’m not sure how many men you’ll hear singing along. The CD, in it’s entirety, is ballad heavy, but the beautiful vocal harmonies and terrific instrumentation make it a gem.
