Garbage ‘One Mile High…Live’

After a seven year hiatus, 2012 saw the return of alt-rockers Garbage with the release of their fifth studio album, “Not Your Kind of People” and a subsequent world tour. Their stop in the mile high city of Denver, Colorado, was recorded for all posterity and recently released on the DVD “One Mile High.Live.” Filmed at the intimate Ogden Theatre, the DVD features their entire 20 song set as well as additional bonus features, including a pre-show warm-up and music videos.

Minus any elaborate stage set, the focal point of the movie is on the band members themselves who are in top form. Guitarists Steve Marker and Duke Erikson sound as tight and fresh as they did back in the nineties. Drummer Butch Vig and touring bassist Eric Avery provide a solid rhythm section . But make no mistake, the star of the show is red haired beauty and lead vocalist Shirley Manson. Her electrifying presence absolutely commands the stage as she leads the band through a solid mix of new tunes like “Automatic System Habit” and “Blood For Poppies” as well as Garbage classics such as “Stupid Girl” and “Push It.” Highlights of the concert include the mesmerizing “Queer” and “Only Happens When It Rains,” showcasing the versatility of Manson’s voice as she goes from sultry vixen to full out grunge attack. Their three song encore includes a snippet of Patti Smith’s “Because the Night” as they close the show with “Vow.”

As the end credits roll to “Time Will Destroy Everything” one thing is clear, their time apart has not hurt Garbage at all. They played like a well oiled machine bringing their eclectic blend of alternative, electronica , and grunge to life on stage. “One Mile High.Live” will make a great addition to any concert lover’s collection.
