When Chris Wyse is not touring and recording with the Cult, he is the frontman and bassist in Owl, who made a return visit to the Viper Room last Saturday in support of their second album, “The Right Thing.”

The band’s 45-minute set was treated like a joyous homecoming by their fans and also served as a great introduction to those who may not be familiar with this powerhouse rock trio.

With the Celtic-themed ode to Wyse’s Irish roots, “Rover,” the nod to “Tomorrow Never Knows,” the psychedelia in “Pusher,” the bluesy introspection of “Give,” and straight-up rockers like “The Right Thing” and “Violent Center,” Owl showed they’re not limited to just one genre of rock music. The cover of the Kinks classic “Destroyer” was a big crowd pleaser, and it looked like they were having as much fun playing it as the audience was rocking out to it.

Along with playing bass guitar and electric upright bass, Wyse delivered the vocal goods, going from the most subtle phrases to impassioned screams with conviction (and pitch intact). Jason Mezilis was an impressive guitarist, as well as being very entertaining to watch. He recreated his guitar sounds from the albums and added a few surprises on stage, including picking up his drink and using it as a glass slide. Dan Dinsmore’s drumming was solid, precise, and expressive: the perfect complement to Wyse and Mezilis.

Owl definitely has the songs, talent, and charisma for a long and interesting career. If you’re a rock fan, I highly recommended seeing this band. You won’t be disappointed!
