Gigantour @ CMAC, Canandaigua, New York 7-6-13

There have now been 8 separate installments of Megadeth’s own Gigantour. This year’s signature event could be one of the best line-ups yet in Black Label Society, Device, Hell Yeah, Newstead and Death Division.

With the music starting at 4:30pm, a new band called Death Division managed by Justis Mustaine took the stage to a very scant crowd. This didn’t dampen the spirits of DD. Led by former Hell Yeah bassist Jerry Montano, the band played through a hearty 25-minute set. The band is currently working on its first full length CD.

Next up was the act that I think mostly everybody was curious about, Newstead led by former Metallica bassist Jason Newstead and Staind guitarist Mike Mushok. The band is also in the midst of releasing a brand new CD called “Heavy Metal Music” on August 6. Newstead and his comrades were aggressive as Mushok was jumping around throughout the bands 30-minute set. Their set was brief and may have been cut short for some apparent reason? Whatever the case, the songs came off powerful live and I’m very interested in hearing what the new CD has to offer in a month’s time.

The band who definitely appeared to garner the biggest crowd reaction all night over any other band was Hell Yeah. The small but crazy crowd went nuts for the self-proclaimed “hillbillies.” Led by former Pantera drummer Vinnie Paul, the band dished out some killer tunes like “Matter of Time,” “You Wouldn’t Know” and the audience favorite “Cowboy Way.” Few have the pipes and vocal screams like Chad Grey and with his new mohawk in tow, he gave the fans something to appreciate both visually and musically.

David Draiman of Disturbed’s side project called Device was up next and it should be duly noted how many times Draiman had to point out people in the crowd to stand during the bands performance. He even went to stand or leave as nobody should be sitting at one of his shows. There was a lot to stand and listen to as the band sounded great for its 50-minute jam. They even threw a cover of Nine Inch Nails’ ”Wish” to complete a great set!

Black Label Society was Black Label Society. Led by Zakk Wylde, the band hasn’t changed much since the last handful of times I have seen them. Zakk’s solo are always a crowd pleaser and rhythm guitarist Nick Cantanese was all over pointing and gesturing to the crowd the entire set. Here’s hoping a new disc will drop soon from the boys in BLS.

Headliner Megadeth played an inspiring hour and half set’s worth of material including tunes from their new disc “Super Collider” that was just released. Opening up with a video of Dave Mustaine saying “Are you ready Canandaigua?” the band took the stage one by one playing chords to “Trust.” They had huge LED lights and screens accompanying their set. Mustaine, who is known for occasional political banter, offered some commentary this evening. He complained about how the government was looking at our texts and emails and then he said to the crowd, “Don’t spy on us,” and went into “Hook in Mouth.” Guitarist Chris Broderick is a very solid player and doesn’t get enough credit for his work on the six string. With Dave Ellefson firmly entrenched as the bass player again, the band is as solid as a unit as it’s ever been in my opinion. With the venue having a capacity of about 15,000 and only pulling in about a third of that, it was disappointing to say the least.

Nonetheless the people who did attend got a solid rock show by this year’s Gigantour performers!
