Since it was the day before the Fourth of July, I wanted to do something American and to me nothing screams American more than rock and roll. So I headed out to a staple of the Charlotte club scene, Amos’ Southend, to catch the Trapt concert. It had been over two years since Trapt made an appearance in the area so I was eager to check them out and they did not disappoint.
The band has gone through some changes recently going the independent route for their latest album, “Reborn” and with the addition of Atreyu guitarist Travis Miguel. Shortly after 11pm, Trapt took the stage and kicked things off with their hit “Who’s Going Home With You Tonight?” much to the appreciation of the crowd. Their set featured a good variety of songs with material from all five of their studio albums included. Musically Trapt sounded great with the solid rhythm section of Pete Charell on bass and Dylan Thomas Howard on drums. New guitarist Travis Miguel seemed to fit right in with the band and comfortably handled the solos. But the standout of the evening was lead singer Chris Taylor Brown. Chris absolutely commands the stage and has a way of truly connecting with the audience. The band for the most part stayed in the background and just let Chris do his thing out front. His vocals were spot on throughout the evening with the high octane “Bring It” and “Contagious” and equally good during the softer moments like the poignant “Black Rose.” Midway through the show Chris strapped on a guitar for “These Walls” which was one of the highlights of the show for me. One of their newer tracks, “Living In The Eye of the Storm” was especially strong live as well. Trapt ended things with “Still Frame” before heading back out for a two song encore which included the fan favorite and show closer “Headstrong.”
This is the third time I have seen Trapt perform and they seem to get better and better each time out. With a set full of hits and solid songs and the captivating stage presence of Brown, they are a must see when they roll through your hometown.
