Black Label Society ‘Unblackened’

When I think of Black Label Society, the first image that comes to mind is Zakk Wylde in all his glory simply tearing it up on the guitar so it was a surprise to see them release a live, acoustic DVD, “Unblackened.” Now this isn’t your typical “unplugged” type show. After all, there still are Marshall stacks on the stage hence the name, “Unblackened.” It is a different take on Black Label Society, a new perspective on some of their songs. Shot at Club Nokia in Los Angeles in March 2013, the concert is intimate and really brings the focus to the soulful beauty of the music.

The DVD opens with some footage from the “Losin’ My Mind” video and then cuts to the band sitting on a simple stage with only the Black Label Society backdrop behind them. The country feel of “Losin’ My Mind” is appealing and brings the band back to their blues and country roots. Zakk and company are on top of their game and are able to really connect with the audience. “Road Back Home” and “Spoke in the Wheel” showcase Wylde on the piano showing he is much more than just a fret burner. No need to worry though, he can still shred like mad and is in fine form on “Throwin’ It All Away” and even brings out his double neck guitar for “Sold My Soul.” Guitarist Nick Catanese delivers some great solo work while Zakk is at the piano and really works the slide on “House of Doom.” Wylde’s raspy almost crunchy vocals work very well with the stripped down format of the songs as well. Highlights of the disc include some video footage of Zakk and his daughter leading into “I Thank You Child” and the inspirational performance of “Sweet Jesus.” Bonus features include interview footage, video of Zakk’s visit to HM Prison, the music video for “Losin’ Your Mind,” and a photo gallery.

“Unblackened” is proof that great music doesn’t come from all the bells and whistles or from cranking the volume to ten, but from the passion of the musicians and the emotions they convey to the audience. It is a must add to your collection.
