Jonny Lang ‘Fight For My Soul’

At the age of 16, Jonny Lang set the music world on fire with his debut album, the blues oriented “Lie To Me.” Now at the age of 32 and no longer the spirited teen of years ago, Lang has released his sixth studio album, “Fight For My Soul.” The new record shows a new level of maturity for Lang as he takes a step back from the blues and gives us a smooth, polished showcase of songs.

With the help of producer Tommy Sims, Lang has crafted an album full of terrific vocal melodies with great arrangements and plenty of pop hooks. The opening tracks “Blew Up (The House)” and “Breakin’ In” almost have a dance kind of beat to them, a real departure from his prior work. His signature gritty vocals are a standout, conveying every emotion note by note, especially on the ballad “The Truth.” The gospel feel of “River” works well and there is even a Christmas song, “Seasons,” which is destined to become a holiday classic. Lang’s guitar work is still top notch although the record features less solo work and more of a complementary guitar style.

If you’re looking for a Jonny Lang blues album, this isn’t the one to get. But if you’re interested to see how Lang has evolved as an artist, you’ll need to give this a listen. “Fight For My Soul” is a fantastic mix of traditional blues and modern pop rock. Jonny’s emotional vocals and masterful guitar give us a classic soulful record that truly will stand the test of time.
