Asking Alexandria and Sevendust @ Rapids Theatre, Niagara Falls, New York 11-5-13

With their 3rd studio album recently released in August, Asking Alexandria has embarked on a US tour in support of it. The “From Death To Destiny Tour” features A.A. and the veteran thrashers Sevendust. This hard-hitting line up left a lasting impression on the masses at The Rapids Theatre.*

Getting the crowd fired up is nothing new for Sevendust frontman Lajon Witherspoon. Having been at the helm of one of the best metal groups for close to two decades, he is a master at getting the crowd involved in their performances. Although they had a short opening set, Sevendust really set the tone for the show. Their high energy set led to the mosh pit opening up, as well as the waves of crowd surfing to flow over the barricades. Witherspoon took a moment to thank Asking Alexandria for having them along on this tour, and exposing Sevendust to their fanbase. Although Sevendust are a well respected metal outfit on the touring circuit, they showed humility and appreciation for every opportunity that they get.

When Asking Alexandria took the stage, the venue errupted. The wave of crowd surfing that Sevendust had encouraged, grew into an all out Tsunami. Having covered, and attended hundreds of shows, I have never witnessed so many people spilling over the barricades at one time. It had actually made photographing them a challenge.

Led by frontman Danny Worsnop, the UK based metalcore group continued the energy that their opener had provided. From the onset of their performance of “Don’t Pray For Me” through their “pretend last song” (as Worsnop referred to it) referring to “Poison,” Lead Guitarist Ben Bruce and the rest of the guys showcased their impeccable timing and musicianship. They did all of this while melting everybody’s faces off.

I had gone into in this show wondering why Sevendust weren’t the headliner? After witnessing “Asking Alexandria” perfroamnce and their rabid fan reaction, it made perfect sense. The two have a slightly different fan base, with age being the biggest difference. This tour exposes fans to the longtime metal heavyweights Sevendust, as well as the “newer kids on the block” with Asking Alexandria. It really was really a Win win for metal fans of every age.
