Monster Magnet ‘Last Patrol’

If you like your metal a little on the trippy side with a solid dose of psychedelic, you’ll want to check out the latest release by Monster Magnet. The pioneers of stoner rock are back with a brand new record, “Last Patrol,” which is a great mix of garage rock, progressive rock, heavy metal, and even punk.

The new record takes lead singer Dave Wyndorf and company back to their garage band roots and was recorded on vintage guitars and amps in their hometown of Red Bank, New Jersey. Inspired by sci-fi, horror, and comic books, the entire album has a real spacey feel to it with lyrics to match. “Last Patrol” definitely takes on a much more psychedelic feel than anything Monster Magnet has recently done especially on the opening track “Live Behind the Clouds.” This is their first album without long time guitarist Ed Mundell but lead guitarist Garrett Sweeny and rhythm guitarist Phil Caivano are quick to step up to the plate. Their dual guitar work on “Mindless Ones” and the epic solos of “End of Time” are not to be missed. One of the best songs was the down home rocking stomp of “Hallelujah” which had a heavy but yet almost country feel to it. Another great track was a heavier version of the old Donovan song “Three Kingfishers.”

“Last Patrol” is a solid effort that is sure to please long time fans as well as new. The record overall just has a really cool, jammy vibe to it so if you’re looking for something a little bit different, check these guys out.
