In 2009, guitar virtuoso Gus G. was handpicked by Ozzy Osbourne to join his band launching him into the realm of rock and roll royalty. But Gus G. is much more than just a talented axeman. He is an extraordinary songwriter and has been shredding it for more than a decade with the bands Dream Evil and Mystic Prophecy as well as his own band Firewind. Now he has just released his first solo record, “I Am The Fire,” which further showcases his many abilities as he handles all keyboard and production duties as well.
The album is of course filled with epic guitar solos but is melody driven with classic rock riffs and some very radio friendly tracks. With a bevy of talented vocalists to choose from, Gus G. has tailored the songs accordingly. Candlemass singer Mats Leven is featured on several tracks including “Blame It On Me” and Devour The Day’s Blake Allison handles the first single, “I Am The Fire.” Other notable performances include the beautiful and powerful Alexia Rodriguez on “Long Way Down” and the eighties hair metal feel of “Summer Days” featuring Jeff Scott Soto. My favorite tracks by far though were the instrumentals. The absolute fretburner “Vengeance” has David Ellefson of Megadeth handling the bass and “Terrified” features none other than Billy Sheehan. No vocals were necessary on these songs with the melody being provided by the brilliant guitar work of Gus G. who can truly make his guitar talk.
“I Am The Fire” is a terrific solo debut for Gus G. with great rock songs and just enough ripping solos to keep things interesting. Whether you’re a fan of awesome guitar work or just great rock and roll, this one is worthy of adding to your collection.
