Heart ‘Fanatic Live From Caesars Colosseum’

What’s the best way to celebrate an album that a band is very proud of? How about by capturing a live performance for everyone’s enjoyment? That’s exactly what Heart has done with their latest CD/DVD package called “Fanatic Live from Caesars Colosseum.” Interestingly enough, this show took place just a few days after I saw Heart live in Lewiston, NY, in July of 2012.

Still lead by the ever youthful Wilson sisters, they take you through the tracks on “Fanatic’ including the title track, “Mashallah,” “59 Crunch,” Walking Good,” and my personal favorite “Dear Old America.” This track already holds up as a Heart classic. I hope they continue to play this live on future tours.

They include a string section on tracks “What About Love,” “Mashallah,” “Walking Good” and “Alone.” Of course, what would a Heart show be without commenting on the voice of Ann Wilson? Still as good as it ever was (as a Talking Head song once said). It was also a treat to see Nancy donning the electric guitar as much as her trusty Martin acoustic. Her rhythm playing really complements that of lead guitarist Craig Bartock. After 10 years of playing together, they really play seamlessly with each other.

There’s also a different take on “Dog & Butterfly” with Debbie Shair’s keyboard playing adding a fresh take on the classic song. Bassist Dan Rothchild’s and drummer Ben Smith’s rhythmic beats drive the song “Walking Good.” Ann provides a flute solo to the song as well. Nancy shows her many talents and tackles the mandolin on “These Dreams.” Of course, Ann’s signature song is “Alone” and if you wondered if she still had or can deliver the goods, this song is the proof. I have seen Heart numerous times over the years and Ann Wilson continues to “bring it” to every show. Tears in fans eyes is another example of her powerful and still melodic voice that can still raise hairs on one’s arms.

“Fanatic” CD producer Ben Mink joins the band and plays the violin on “Dear Old Americaand then there’s no better way to wrap up a Heart show than with their classic tracks “Crazy on You” and “Barracuda.” Bonus footage includes the cut “Magic Man.” A culmination of every facet of the band is here, making this CD/DVD package a must have for any Heart fan, or simply put, music “Fanatic!”
