Peter Frampton and The Doobie Brothers brought in thousands of people of all ages to hear the sounds of summer provided by these rock legends. The Grammy award winning Doobie Brothers have continued to appeal to various generations with their timeless music of the last 4 decades.

They started with the up tempo, “Jesus Is Just Alright,” which set the mood and amped the crowd for the rest of the set. The blues based feel that we all know and love about the Doobie Brothers music kicked in full force with “Don’t Start Me Talkin’.” Guy Allison’s fingers seemingly dance on the keys. The band moved in synchronicity at key points during some of their songs which energized the crowd even more.

A beloved favorite of any fan of The Doobie Brothers is their chart topping “Black Water.” The violin captures the song’s southern drawl with elongated strokes of the summer winds by the water, and of course, that Mississippi moon. How can you not want to believe in the words as he sings a sweet Dixieland lullaby that pleads for the Mississippi moon to keep on shinin’ it’s light, making everything alright?!

The headliner, guitar rock legend Peter Frampton, came walking out to the side of the stage to look at the set up before starting at 9:30PM. He was not making eye contact with anyone, trying to be discreet in his check and then hurried backstage. About five minutes later this amazing guitarist and song writer came out to perform to the eager crowd. The instrumental beginning of “Doobie Wah” immediately injected a summertime vibe into the humid, mist filled night under the shell. This led in to “Lines On My Face,” which is appreciated for its peaceful, drifting melody.

Frampton’s bread and butter tune, “Show Me The Way,” brought the crowd to a crescendo but he manged to keep it there for the majority of the backend of his set. “Money” was where the emotion poured from Frampton, it was clear that this is one of his favorite songs to perform live. He also does a great job on Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun” which he has incorporated into his set for the last handful of years.

Frampton has built a strong working relationship with fellow guitarist Adam Lester. Lester plays both acoustic and electric guitar, complementing him when needed, but also allowing Frampton to expand and do his thing.

The encore was The Beatles song “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.” Frampton stretched the notes from his guitar while looking over the crowd as they were signing word for word to the George Harrison classic.

Two great bands made for a great night of classic rock music. It was much appreciated by all who attended, especially this writer!
