The 1st annual “Kerfuffle,” hosted by 107.7, Buffalo’s new Alternative station, was a day that should go down as one of the most successful stories of 2014 for any new companies starting off in Buffalo, NY. This station has only been live since September of 2013 and they have amassed quite a following and sold out this day long show, quite the accomplishment I would say. Lead DJ Nik Rivers and his staff did an amazing job organizing and running a very smooth event. BackstageAxxess attended this magnificent gig and captured photos from Bear Hands, Kongos, Bleachers, the headliner Cage the Elephant and DJ Crystal Method, who performed in between these sets.
Crystal Method seemed to really engage the crowd with his own style of DJ’ing. Bear Hands seemed to incorporate a lot of dub step and electronic into their music. Kongos is a band from South Africa consisting of 4 brothers Johnny, Jesse, Dylan and Daniel Kongos. Its not often you see the accordion, let alone it being a featured instrument in the band. Johnny Kongos displayed his competency for playing it throughout the set. Bleachers is the side project and brain child of Jack Antoff who also is in “fun.” This set was very upbeat and Antoff didn’t slow down at all at anytime that he was on the stage it seemed. He seemed to pick up Buffalo lingo by joking “I want a garbage plate and a bowl of Cheerios.” He praised the radio station and said he wished that New York City had something like this.
The band everybody was waiting for finally arrived as Cage the Elephant took the stage at about 9:40pm. Led by the unpredictable vocalist Matthew Shultz, the band went into its first track of off its latest release “Melophobia” called “Spiderweb.” It didn’t take long for this Schultz (his brother plays rhythm guitar) to jump into the crowd and crowd surf with his microphone and cord in hand! Very crazy, but it went off without any issues.
The band played a solid hour and 10 minute plus set giving the fans what thy wanted and that something was something different. The band played it’s heart out for its 14 songs set. Again, I cannot say enough about what this radio station has accomplished in such a short time. Stay tuned to the station for more things to come in 2014!
