When I think about the music of Sevendust, laidback is usually not the first thing that pops up into my mind. Pounding drums? Yes. Blistering guitars? Yes. Powerful vocals? Yes . Laidback? Not so much. And yet, laidback is the best way to describe Sevendust’s latest offering “Time Travelers & Bonfires.”
Their newest record is an acoustic one featuring six brand new songs and re-recorded, acoustic versions of six others. The album is self-produced and released on their own 7Bros.Records label and was partially funded by their loyal fans through a PledgeMusic campaign which exceeded all expectations in just the first weekend.
Out of the new tracks, the smooth vocals and easy to sing chorus of “Come Down” is a stand out with the upbeat groove of “Bonfire” not far behind. “The Wait” is an absolutely beautiful song and not to be missed. The first single to be released is one of the re-recorded tracks “Black” and although I enjoyed it, what really took my breath away was this new version of “Denial.” The stripped down feel really let the emotions of Lajon Witherspoon’s voice come to life and the acoustic guitars were exquisite.
I always enjoy it when a band can do something a little bit different and do it well. “Time Travelers & Bonfires” does just that, showing us a gentler side of Sevendust with their inhibitions let down and their emotional side at the forefront.
