Singer/songwriter Colbie Caillat took her Gypsy Heart tour through the WNY area this past Saturday night. The Seneca Events Center was the venue and Caillat enjoyed playing before a very full house. Accompanied by an impressive light and stage show, she was able to deliver a quality show without leaving any stone unturned.
Caillat musical resume started even before she ever picked up a microphone. Her Dad is a well known producer who produced some of the biggest albums ever, including Fleetwood Mac’s “Rumors” album. You can say Caillat was destined for the spotlight but she didn’t really take an interest until she saw Lauryn Hill’s performance in the movie Sister Act 2. Fast forward to this past Saturday night and you can see a little bit of everything in Calliat’s performance. She has taken pop, country, hip-hop, rock, and blues and woven all these forms, and more, into her music.
Not only does Calliat have a soothing, but yet very strong voice, she displayed her various talents on piano on “Floodgates” and acoustic guitar on “Fallen” and “Bubbly.” She was very engaging as she talked about her professional relationship with her songwriting partner Jason Reeves. She talked about a new CD she worked on with him that will be released in a few weeks titled “Gypsy Heart.” In fact, she opened up the show with the first track from it titled “Live it Up.” Five songs were played from the upcoming disc as her performance focused primarily on it. The songs sounded wonderful and really blended well with the rest of her set. She was backed by a talented band that incorporated an accordion on “Never Gonna Let You Down” and a ukulele on “Rude.”
Colbie was reflective before the heartfelt song “Try.” She said it took her a while to feel comfortable with who she really is and that producer Babyface helped bring that spirit out in her. She also sang “Lucky,” a song that she collaborated on with Jason Mraz, it was a fitting touch to have Mraz appearing on the video screen behind her.
Colbie Caillat is an artist that is ready to take the next step. With her next release, it could potentially send her into superstardom. Seeing her in the comforts of an intimate venue, such as the Events Center, might be a show you look back on and consider yourself “Lucky” in having done so!
