Butcher Babies ‘Uncovered’

The first thing you’ll notice about the new Butcher Babies covers album is that the cover is a cover of a cover. Confused yet? Let me explain. The album cover art is eerily similar to the “G N’ R Lies” cover by Guns ‘N Roses, perhaps on purpose perhaps not. The EP is short in length with only five tracks with each member of Butcher Babies choosing one of their favorites to include.

There are some interesting song choices as things kick off with the chants of frontwomen Heidi Shepherd and Carla Harvey on their version of “Beer Drinkers& Hell Raisers” by ZZ Top. It’s fast and heavy and completely different than the original. Next up is the obscure “They’re Coming to Take Me Away” by Napoleon XIV. The opening is creepy and evil and unlike the original, I don’t hate it. The Suicidal Tendencies song “Don’t Give A Fuck” is next and while I prefer the original, the band does a decent job in making it their own. A huge surprise hits you next with a Butcher Babies cover of “Crazy Horses” by The Osmonds. The song cuts like a knife and is absolutely blistering. Closing things out is the S.O.D. track, “Pussy Whipped,” which is a full on attack of guitars and drums.

When a band releases a cover it should be better or at least different from the original. Butcher Babies “Uncovered” is definitely different but the jury is still out on the better.
