Black Star Riders ‘The Killer Instinct’

If you’re a fan of classic American melodic rock, you’re going to love the latest release from Black Star Riders, “The Killer Instinct.” BSR is a spin-off of sorts with Thin Lizzy guitarists Scott Gorham and Damon Johnson and vocalist Ricky Warwick in the lineup along with drummer Jimmy DeGrasso and bassist Robbie Crane. But rest assured Black Star Riders is a true band and although there is a solid Thin Lizzy influence, the band completely stands on its own.

“The Killer Instinct” is the second studio album from Nuclear Blast Records and is quite simply outstanding. The record is heavy with crunchy guitar riffs and songs that truly tell a story. From the opening title track, the classic rock feel is ever present but never sounds dated. With producer Nick Raskulinecz, the album sounds fresh and slick without being overdone. Don’t miss the Irish punk feel of “Soldierstown” and the full charge of “Sex, Guns & Gasoline.” The twin guitars of Gorham and Johnson play off each other as if they were blended into one. Vocalist Ricky Warwick is often unfairly compared to the late, great Phil Lynott but he is an amazing talent on his own. His vocals are clear with a rough edge when needed and at times he seems to channel a little bit of Phil himself.

“The Killer Instinct” is a perfect title for this record as it is a killer collection of rock and roll tunes. Black Star Riders has done it again paying homage to the band’s classic roots but at the same time leading the way for the future of rock and roll.
