What is supposed to be one of the hottest summer shows of the summer is the package called the Boys of Zummer Tour with Fall Out Boy and Wiz Khalifa. This also included a few DJ’s before and after their respective sets. I have to admit this was an odd pairing to say the least. I wasn’t sure if these acts belonged on the same bill but wanted to take it all in before I made a decision.
The video screen was cool as it was lowered and it was almost the length of the stage. Unfortunately what wasn’t cool was the video of Wiz Khalifa attired in underwear along with two topless women when the crowd was mostly attended by young teenagers. I even saw a young boy who couldn’t be more than 8 against the barrier in the front row. My thought was what was he thinking when he saw that or what was the parent thinking that this would be an appropriate show to take a child to?
Khalifa took the stage to the appropriate song “Ass Drop,” considering what was just shown to the audience. As he rapped about primarily marijuana use and sex, most of his songs weren’t as deep or meaningful as your Eminen or Run DMC. The most playful thing he did for a minute or so was ride a segway around during the track “Black and Yellow.” He also made his way to the secondary stage at the end of the 300 level seats during his set for the track “Taylor Gang.” His set ended with some fire and confetti being shot off.
This is the 3rd time that headliner Fall Out Boy has taken the stage in the WNY area over the last 3 years (2013 at the Rapids Theater and last year they also performed at Darien Lake.) Seeing the band in the past you can tell how much of a well oiled machine they have become since they returned from their long hiatus.
Vocalist and frontman Patrick Stump and his signature castro style hat led the hour and 20 minute charge that included the opener “Sugar, We’re Goin Down.” The 16 song set really focused on the band’s prior material as Fall Out Boy is currently on tour in support of their latest release “America Beauty/American Psycho.”
The band also had a dazzling light and laser display as well as various fireworks that were shot off during their performance. Like Kalifa, Stump, bassist Pete Wentz and guitarist Joe Trohman made their way to the secondary stage to perform “Immortals” and “Young Volcanoes.” Afterwards, drummer Andy Hurley enjoyed his spotlight with a drum solo. Both Wentz and Trohman made their way around the stage throughout the entire set.
Again, I am not sure on the management who thought it was a great idea to mix these two acts that clearly didn’t belong together. At least with Fall Out Boy you witnessed a professional show with musicians who let their show and music do the talking for them!
