P.O.D. ‘The Awakening’

West Coast rockers P.O.D. have been spreading their faith based message to the masses for over 20 years now. Led by vocalist Sonny Sandoval and guitarist Marcos Curiel, the band is back with their 10th studio album, a conceptual epic entitled “The Awakening.” Produced by Howard Benson, the record tells the story of a man dealing with his life, the mistakes he’s made and his eventual journey to spiritual awakening.

Of course, since “The Awakening” is a concept album, it’s meant to be listened to in its entirety but the songs are all solid and easily stand on their own merits. From the hooks and catchy chorus of the lead single “This Goes Out To You” to the rap metal mix of “Rise of N.W.O.,” P.O.D. is musically on top of their game. The rhythm section of Traa Daniels on bass and Wuv Bernardo on drums is full throttle on the hard charging “Speed Demon” and “Revolucion” which features an appearance by Lou Koller (Sick of It All). There are some changes of pace as well with the daunting beauty and female vocals by Maria Brink on “Criminal Conversations” and the jazz guitar and trumpet stylings of “Want It All.” Closing things out is the uplifting power ballad “The Awakening.”

P.O.D. has definitely reached their creative peak with “The Awakening.” It’s one of the best concept records in recent years and well worth the listen.
