“Navy Metal Night” is the latest release from the German metal stalwarts U.D.O. This 2 CD/DVD package is not your standard live release. Recorded live at a sold out show in February of 2014, it features U.D.O performing with the German Navy Orchestra (the Marinemusikkorps Nordsee) with new and dynamic orchestral arrangements of U.D.O. songs.
Classical music and metal are a natural mix and and frontman Udo Dirkschneider leads his band through a one of a kind experience. The setlist is also different than the norm with no Accept songs included and some deep cuts like “Animal Instinct” and “Faceless World” being brought back in. Highlights include a hauntingly beautiful version of “Dancing With An Angel” featuring Doro Pesch on female vocals and a majestic version of “Days of Hope and Glory.” “Cut Me Out” gets the swing treatment turning the song into a big band classic and “Trainride In Russia” is an eclectic folk song complete with accordion. The orchestra is not to be outshined with instrumentals like the theme from “Das Boot” and “In the Hall of the Mountain King” but it is the blending of the two that really makes this a special event.
As the guitars of Andrey Smirnov and Kasperi Heikkinen and the German Navy Orchestra mesh in exquisite symmetry, you’ll be treated to a U.D.O. experience like no other making “Navy Metal Night” a much needed piece in your collection.
