Joel Hoekstra’s 13 ‘Dying To Live’

Joel Hoekstra has to be one of the hardest working guitarists in rock and roll. If his plate wasn’t already full, Joel has a brand new project to share with fans called Joel Hoekstra’s 13 that just released a new album of melodic hard rock hits “Dying To Live.”

The record features a literal who’s who of rock greats with vocalists Russell Allen and Jeff Scott Soto both contributing, drummer Vinny Appice, bassist Tony Franklin, and numerous special guests. Kicking things off are two of the heavier hitting tracks “Say Goodbye To The Sun” and the first single “Anymore” both with Allen on vocals. Gears shift to a more melodic rock pace on “Until I Left You” with Jeff Scott Soto lending his pipes to the mix. There is a very cool intro to check out on “Never Say Never” and the vocal distortions on “Dying To Live” are truly unique. As always the guitar work from Hoekstra is superb with some exquisite solos. But for the most part, it is the songs that take center stage with plenty of catchy riffs and contagious melodies. The beautiful “What We Believe” closes the album. It is both a stunning and powerful song with Soto’s vocals blending perfectly with those of special guest Chloe Lowery from Trans-Siberian Orchestra. In fact, it was the highlight of the album for me as Joel’s guitar work weaves in and out as if providing an instrumental third voice.

“Dying To Live” is a masterpiece of melodic hard rock and a true showcase for the songwriting talent of Hoekstra. Its’ a must add to your collection and something you’ll want to listen to time and time again.
