Leaves’ Eyes ‘King of Kings’

With its blend of classical elements, beautiful orchestrations and mind blowing metal guitars, symphonic metal is a unique genre that has always piqued my interest and nobody does this better than the German-Norwegian band Leaves’ Eyes. Their newest record is a grand concept album based on the story of Norway’s first king, Harald Fairhair with his epic battles and ultimate victory. Everything that Leaves’ Eyes does from elaborate stage setups to fantastic lyrical imagery is majestic and epic and this latest release, “King of Kings,” is no exception.

The record opens with the folk like “Sweven” before delving into the metal majesty of “King of Kings” and “Halvdan The Black.” The beauty of Liv Kristine’s vocals are in sharp contrast to the guttural growls of Alexander Krull. The Celtic interlude “Feast of the Year” serves as a soft break before the second half of the album crushes in. A special appearance by the London Voices choir adds to the symphonic build and intensity of Liv Kristine’s voice as her passionate vocals surround you. The colossal battle saga “Blazing Waters” is not to be missed with the blistering guitars of Thorsten Bauer and Pete Streit front and center. Closing things out is the Celtic nuance of “Swords In Rock.”

Musically and vocally superb, “King of Kings” is a monumental album that is a must add to your collection. Give it a listen and prepare for a spectacular journey through music and time.
