Bring Me The Horizon ‘That’s The Spirit’

Starting out as deathcore band before garnering much success with a metalcore sound, British rockers Bring Me The Horizon have taken a turn toward mainstream rock for their fifth (5th) studio album “That’s The Spirit.” The new record has a more alt-pop feel mixed with their metalcore roots and is a lot more radio friendly. With contagious hooks and sing along choruses, the songs have a light hearted sound but the lyrics cut deep touching on issues like depression and addiction.

Kicking things off with the slightly dubstep feel of “Doomed,” the record is song after song of accessible rock. It’s easy to listen to and hard not to like. From the cheerleader chants of “S-P-I-R-I-T” in “Happy Song” it’s easy to forget who it is your’re listening to until the abrasive chorus takes things up a notch. This dichotomy holds true for most of the album with tunes having a poppy feel with bursts of metalcore action to rock the house. Singles “Throne” and “Drown” are radio friendly rockers that will have live audiences in a frenzy. Frontman Oli Sykes shows off his range from screamo style metalcore to pop ballads and does it extremely well. The keyboard stylings of Jordan Fish really shine on the softer ballad “Follow You” and guitarist Lee Malia gets his licks in on “Happy Song.”

“That’s The Spirit” is a step in a new direction for Bring Me The Horizon. Older fans may be disappointed with their new sound but this record is going to be huge, spawning hit after hit and legions of new BMTH fans around the world.
