Two women who have been getting a lot of attention in the metal world in the last few years are Heidi Shepherd and Carla Harvey, frontwomen for the L.A. metal band Butcher Babies. The band is back with their second (2nd) full length album “Take It Like A Man” on Century Media Records. Most of the hype behind the band is focused on these two vocalists with their sexy bad girl looks and contrasting clean and growling vocals. However, the band behind these two women is the real deal and on this new album they prove to be the glue that really holds Butcher Babies together.
Acting as ringmaster of this metal mania, Shepherd urges you to “step right up” at the beginning of the lead single “Monster’s Ball.” The song has a nice bounce to it and a great chorus that will get you moving. Next up are three thrashers that really showcase the skill of guitarist Henry Flury as he sets fire to riff after blazing riff on tracks like “Igniter” and “The Cleansing.” The rhythm section of Jason Klein on bass and Chris Warner behind the kit never stops as they hold the frenetic pace. “Never Go Back” and “For The Fight” have good hooks and are pretty contagious once you listen to them a few times. The softer side of the band shows on the ballad “Thrown Away” as the vocals of Shepeherd and Harvey are simply haunting. Closing things out is a new version of their 2010 single “Blonde Girls All Look The Same.”
“Take It Like A Man” is a solid follow up to “Goliath” and shows that Butcher Babies are much more than just two pretty faces.
