The Unguided “Lust and Loathing”

The Unguided

One of the best new bands to hit the melodic death metal scene in recent years is the five piece Swedish outfit The Unguided. Formed in 2010 from former Sonic Syndicate members Richard and Roger Sjunnesson and Roland Johansson, the band has become a force to be reckoned with in the world of melodeath. They have released their third full length album “Lust and Loathing” and it is simply a beast of a record.

Like any good melodeath album, “Lust and Loathing” is a true dichotomy between the brutal metal riffs and the beautiful melodies which meld together in the form of unique and catchy tunes. “Enraged” opens with the exquisite keyboards of Roger Sjunnesson and the clean, mellow vocals of Roland Johansson but things quickly change up with the brutal guitar of Roland kicking in along with the harsh vocal growlings of Richard Sjunnesson. “Heartseeker” is a standout track with brilliant keyboard work and a huge, melodic chorus. Bassist Henric Liljesand and drummer Richard Schill provide a solid and technically proficient rhythm section throughout the record. The production is massive and results in an absolutely colossal sound that completely envelops the listener. Closing out the record is “Hate (and Other Triumphs)” with grand keyboard runs and blistering guitars set to an undeniably haunting melody.

With “Lust and Loathing,” The Unguided have just raised the melodeath bar a few notches higher making this one a must add to your collection.
