Since their highly anticipated return to the stage last year after a four year hiatus, Disturbed has risen to heights in popularity reserved for major super groups. The packed house at Darien Lake Performing Arts Center last Sunday is evidence that the band is one of the most popular touring acts of the year. This was their second visit to the area as they played to a sold out Rapids Theatre crowd this past April. Opening the show with “Ten Thousand Fists” in a fire breathing, laser flashing, ear splitting volume, Disturbed set the tone for the night. Hit after hit followed.
Lead singer Dave Draiman pounded his fist into the air to lead rabid fans who shouted lyrics to every tune. Fellow band members include bassist John Moyer, guitarist Dan Donegan and drummer Mike Wengren. They were in great form banging out each song with the enthusiasm of teenagers. A mid set slow down for the popular version of “Sounds of Silence” showed the power in Draiman’s percussive vocal style. The metal returned with “Inside The Fire” and “The Light”. The finale was an extra loud version of “Down with the Sickness” that left the crowd screaming for more. In true Disturbed fashion no encore song left the legion of fans a bit disturbed themselves.
Breaking Benjamin appeared on the under card and had a strong showing. They played a string of hits and a mid-show medley that included Star Wars “Imperial March” and Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit”. Openers Alter Bridge and Saint Asonia warmed up the crowd with strong sets that had them on their feet for the early part of the show. Overall promoter Live Nation hit a home run with this 4 band line up.
