It’s been seven long years since Dope has released a new record but they are finally back on the attack with their sixth full length album, “Blood Money, Part 1.” The record is the brainchild of frontman Edsel Dope who is a true artist in every sense of the word providing everything from vocals and live drums to programming, producing, art and video direction, and everything in between. The sound is a mix of nu-metal, industrial, horror rock, and metal. Basically, it’s heavy as hell with killer grooves and catchy metal hooks.
The record features blistering guitars from not only Virus but also from Nikk Dibs, former Chimera guitarist Matt Szlachta, and DJ Nelson with the original Dope lineup of Edsel, Virus, bassist Acey Slade, and drummer Racci Shay out on tour. The songwriting is strong with meaty riffs and introspective, reflective lyrics which showcase Edsel’s vocals whether he is purring softly or revving things up to an intoxicating scream. The album opens with a short voiceover introduction before slamming into high gear with the title track. Standout tracks include the melodic rock of “A New Low” and the propulsive beats of the groove laden “Hypocrite.” “Lexapro” provides a dramatic break midway with poignant piano and vocals full of emotion and pain.
Dope has definitely upped their game with “Blood Money, Part 1.” Pick up your copy, sit back, and indulge your inner metalhead today.
