If you like your metal aggressive and intense, you’re going to want to check out “Vengeful Ascension,” the latest offering from one of the best in blackened death metal, Goatwhore. The band wanted a raw, live feel for their seventh full length album and so turned to their live soundman Jarrett Pritchard for production duties. This is the second record that Goatwhore has recorded in analog, reel to reel and it totally works for their sound.
The album opens with the thundering drums of Zack Simmons, followed by the fierce bass of James Harvey and extreme guitar of Sammy Duet on “Forsaken.”This sets the stage for the rest of the record. Lyrically Goatwhore puts a slight twist on their usual Satanic lyrics tracing the fall of Lucifer and his attempts to ascend back up setting him up as a true anti-hero, a theme which many can relate to in terms of trying to rise up but continually being beaten back down. Musically Goatwhore is brutal, ripping out your insides with sheer power and force, the perfect match to frontman Ben Falgoust’s guttural shrieks. Check out the thrashing speed of “Mankind Will Have No Mercy,” the more traditional black metal vibe of “Abandon Indoctrination” and the absolute mayhem and bedlam of “Those Who Denied God’s Will.”
“Vengeful Ascension” is an utter beast of an album. Don’t miss the chance to experience the brain melting metal madness for yourself.
