Pop star Fergie played the 1st of two sold out shows at the Fallsview Casino this past Tuesday night. Fergie is best known for her work with her former band The Black Eye Peas, whom she recently permanently left earlier this year. Fergie isn’t on tour but is doing a few dates here and there and these shows at the Fallsview are the only ones currently scheduled until this point. With 6 studio albums from The Black Eyed Peas and 2 of her own efforts, Fergie had a catalogue to reach from for her performance.
Fergie came out on stage decked out in a tight gold matching top and bottom. She was surrounded by her band which had guitarist, bassist, drummer, DJ, keyboardist/guitarist and a few dancers. She started off with the set with primarily solo material before she jumped into a rock set featuring 3 various covers that included Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones and Heart. The rest of the set consisted mostly songs from her previous band The Black Eyed Peas.
The show itself didn’t have a consistent flow and when the show did start to gain some steam, the band would leave the stage and a few videos were shown. This happened on 2 separate occasions. Not sure what the videos had to do with the show itself but I guess it gave the band a needed break perhaps? There were no costume changes except a jacket change. Fergie moved about the stage and made plenty of eye contact with the crowd throughout her set. Her voice was strong at times, especially when it had to be, like during “Barracuda” for example. The DJ also enjoyed a spotlight and tried to rev up the crowd during another band break.
I thought the show lacked consistency and there were too many lulls before some songs were started. I believe this may have to do with the lack of playing together and not being in synch yet. Either way, this show missed the mark with me.
