Trombone Shorty Voodoo Threauxdown @ Artpark Lewiston, NY 6-14-22

One of the biggest musical parties of the year was held at Artpark this past Tuesday night. Making his first appearance at Artpark since 2018, Trombone Shorty Voodoo Threauxdown had a nice mix of everything.  The other bands were Tank and The Bangas, Big Freedia, Cyril Neville: The Uptown Ruler, George Porter Jr. & Dumpstaphunk. Each brought their own flavor of music to the Voodoo Threauxdown. Headliner Trombone Shorty recently came out with their 12th studio effort titled ‘Lifted’ and we will focus on their performance for this review.

Taking the stage at around 8:20pm, the band went into the 2nd track off the new disc called “It Ain’t No Use.”  Playing his trusty trombone for this track, Shorty went back and for between playing his trombone, trumpet and singing acapella all night long. When he wasn’t doing either, he was either encouraging his 10 piece band or getting the crowed revved up. 3 tracks were played off the new disc  including “I’m Standing Here,” “Come Back” and the title track “Lifted.” After the Meter’s cover of “It Ain’t No Use,” the band rocked-out with “Where It At?” What a bandleader Shorty is. You can see his masterful leadership all night long while his band responds accordingly. The versatility of the Andrews and the band is this group’s greatest strength. The group was quick to highlight its New Orleans roots, while updating the classic sounds with its modern sensibilities. If you have never been to Mardi Gras, that’s ok. Shorty and his band bring that giant full of gumbo music to you. He did that all night long in Lewiston.

The hour and half set was a perfect way to get the summers started off right. Artpark is gearing up for along summer of concerts and you may want to check all the happenings out at the Artpark website.
