A night of country music took over the newly renovated Riviera Theatre in North Tonawanda, NY this past Wednesday night. Both Terri Clark and Deana Carter put their respective names on the music map back in the mid 1990’s. Fast forward 30 years, both artists are still highly revered by their fans. It was very evident by the crowd participation through each of the artist sets.
First up was Deana Carter. Carter’s set was very barebones and stripped down. She was only accompanied by her husband Jim McPhail as both played electric and acoustic through their 1 hour set. Carter joked that her husband was trooper playing these songs that were written about her former relationships. She talked about her dad (Fred Carter Jr.) being a huge influence on her career. He was a very well known guitarist in his own right. Carter also talked about opening up for Bob Dylan and how he shocked her for knowing her monstrous album at the time, ‘Did I Shave My Legs for This?’ She then subsequently played the track. She closed the set with her biggest hit in “Strawberry Wine.” This show gave off a storytellers type of vibe. She even sang a few versus to the Melanie song “Brand New Key” for good measure.
Clark took a different approach to her set, she had a full band and let her music do much of the talking. Her hour and half set contained 18 songs that also included a cool medley of classic rock hits. Clark went back to the 2000 ‘Fearless” album to open up her set with “Gasoline.” She grabbed the audience’s attention immediately and held onto it throughout her performance. Clark came out with a digital only release back in May called ‘Take 2 & Greatest Hits.’ This album was about adding a fresh take to some of her old hits with some other artists. She was asked about who would she like to work with on the album. She said Kelly Clarkson. That dream came true as Clarkson did the song “”If I Were You” with her. She talked about her love of all 90’s music and did a cool cover of the New Radical’s song “You Get What You Give.” Clark donned an acoustic guitar for the song “Now That I Found You,” while her drummer lead the crowd on waving their lit up cell phones. At the end of her set, Clark did a cool medley of various rock songs that included “Heart of Rock and Roll” and “Born to Run” to name a few.
Again, the ladies took charge and they both delivered a sold set of music for all in attendance!
