Engelbert Humperdinck @ Seneca Niagara Casino, Niagara Falls, NY 4-5-25

I’m always about trying to see a performer at least once. Engelbert Humperdinck has played around the WNY area several times over the last few years but due to scheduling, I was unable to make any of those dates. When I found out he was playing the Seneca Niagara Casino and that he was about to turn 89 years old (in May), I made sure that my schedule was clear to take this show in. This was the first time he has played this venue.

Humperdinck came out wearing a tuxedo to a rousing applause as he settled into the Carl Belew cover “Am I that Easy.” The show ended up being a good mix of original and cover material. After a few songs, Humperdinck settled in to tell some stories but unfortunately the way he held his mic (very low), the volume wasn’t translating to the audience. After some feedback by the crowd, the sound engineer adjusted the volume on his microphone so everyone could hear what Humperdinck was saying. Maybe the song that is most associated with Humperdinck was sang early in the set in “After the Lovin.” Once the mix on the volume was settled in, you could hear that Humperdinck still has a strong voice. He still commands a strong sense of endearment from the female portion too. It was no more evident when Humperdinck removed his bow tie and jacket before the Franki Valli cover “Can’t Take my Eyes Off of You” as cheers erupted from them. He talked about his friendship with the late Toby Keith. He dedicated “Don’t Let the Old Man In” to his memory. After this song, he then talked about the passing of his wife and that he made a promise to sing “Everywhere I Go” in her memory. He said he didn’t have enough time to perform all the songs he would like to so he did a medley of some of those songs. That included great rendition of  “Spanish Eyes.” He didn’t exit the stage long before he returned for the encore to do 2 more songs to close out the evening.

I didn’t know what to expect as I didn’t watch any videos of Humperdinck before his show. I wanted to be in surprise. He moved all about the stage with ease. He sat on a stool occasionally but did the majority of the show walking and moving around. He was very interactive and his voice was stellar. Outside of the minor volume adjustment issues at the very beginning of the set, this was a fantastic show all around! It just shows that age sometimes is just a number.
