Jon Anderson and The Band Geeks 4-30-25
On the evening of April 30, 2025, the historic Riviera Theatre in North Tonawanda came alive with the ethereal sounds of legendary Yes frontman Jon Anderson. He was joined again by The Band Geeks. The anticipation was palpable as fans of all ages filled the beautifully renovated venue, eager to experience an unforgettable night of Yes epics and selections from the ensemble’s latest studio album, “True.”
The show kicked off with “Close to The Edge,” a timeless piece that was an album’s side worth of material when it came out over 50 years ago. They delivered a high-octane version of the epic, reminding us of the enduring quality of Yes’s music. The musicianship was impeccable, showcasing the backing band’s talent and versatility.
The chemistry between Anderson and The Band Geeks was not just evident, but it was a force that created a seamless blend of classic prog rock and contemporary sound. This fusion kept the audience engaged and connected to the performance.
Jon Anderson consistently captivated the crowd with his iconic voice and warm, ethereal stage presence. His voice, still as hauntingly beautiful as it was in his prime, effortlessly soared through the complex melodies that Yes fans cherish. The Band Geeks harmonized flawlessly, adding depth to the already rich sound.
The setlist was a carefully curated mix of Anderson’s solo work and timeless Yes classics. Songs like “Owner of a Lonely Heart” and “Starship Trooper” resonated with the crowd, who cheered enthusiastically for every familiar note.
The standout moments were not songs from the Yes catalog but mesmerizing performances of the newer material. The group performed three songs from “Shine On.” While classic rock artists usually avoid performing newer material out of fear that there will be a mass exodus to the restrooms, the newer material not only fit perfectly in the set, but kept fans in their seats.
The best song of the evening was “Once Upon a Dream,” which contains all of the elements that make a great prog-rock song. While the studio version is great, the live version took it to new heights.
It would be impossible to single out a performer. The band is the sum of its parts, and each member’s contribution was significant. I hope this lineup finds more opportunities to perform with other artists; they are an extraordinary ensemble.
In sum, Jon Anderson and The Band Geeks delivered a concert that celebrated the timeless music of Yes and Jon Anderson. The evening was a testament to the enduring power of song and the magic that happens when passionate artists come together. The Riv was indeed fortunate to host such an extraordinary show.
