Tom Petty Estate shares a new video for ‘Never Be You’ from the deluxe edition of “Long After Dark”

Today, the Tom Petty Estate shares a new video for “Never Be You,” the focus track from the deluxe edition of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers groundbreaking, but often overlooked album, Long After Dark. The video was created by Emmy Award-winning animator, painter and experimental filmmaker Jeff Scher (Bob Dylan, Graham Nash, Paul Simon) and features his trademark kaleidoscopic style of hundreds of drawings that he colors and paints with a variety of mediums to bring them to life with extraordinary effect. Since its release last month, the band’s original version continues to climb at radio, where this week it’s #6 Greatest Gainer at AAA.
Co-written by fellow Heartbreaker Benmont Tench, Petty’s haunting version of “Never Be You” was amongst the music left off the original album in 1982, instead it became a #1 country hit for Rosanne Cash.
Long After Dark Deluxe, which was released last month to widespread critical acclaim via Geffen/UMe, debuted at #6 on Billboard‘s Top Ten Album and Top 10 Vinyl charts—listen/share here. The deluxe features 45 minutes of unearthed music that was lost in the debate over the album’s original direction. “There was some music recorded for Long After Dark that didn’t get on the record, that I thought would’ve made it a better album,” said Tom Petty. “I left off…four things that I liked quite a bit. And probably a few more written that never even got in the door.”
The estate opened their archives earlier this year to share additional previously unreleased music and never-before-seen, newly remastered, film from the era 1982 to 1983, including the cult classic, TOM PETTY: HEARTBREAKERS BEACH PARTYdirected by Academy Award-winning director Cameron Crowe (Almost Famous, Jerry Maguire).
